AT&T threatened: Unlocking the iPhone3G
Author: iBlog iPhone // Category:Sunday, February 28
A current issue that many consumers are faced with when contemplating buying the iPhone 3G over, say, a Blackberry, is that the only available network is AT&T.
Buyers with longtime commitments to their Verizon or T-Mobile plans for instance are hesitant to switch over just because they want the iPhone.
Despite AT&T’s efforts to keep their customers and gain more through their monopoly over the iPhone, people have discovered that the 3G can be unlocked in the same way as the original iPhone.
There are companies online, even instructional videos that offer software and teach people how to unlock their iPhone, and use their preferred carrier with it and go along with your desired fees and charges. People can also get applications for free that they would otherwise have to pay to download.
Not only can someone learn from a site, but also pre-unlocked iPhones are also available through websites like Amazon and EBay.
These methods of changing the phone carriers is complete forgery, but is a fast growing and popular way for people to get what they want without switching carriers.
Unfortunately for AT&T, soon it just might make more sense for them to split the rights with another popular carrier… or maybe they can soak up the ownership for a little bit longer. Either way, people feel the need to cheat the system and will probably win this battle.
